2009 Golf Tournament

The Cabarrus County Medical Society Alliance held its Fifth Annual Charity Golf Tournament on Monday, October 12 at the Cabarrus Country Club. As it has been since the tournament's first year, the beneficiary was the Public School Nurse Program as administered by the Cabarrus Health Alliance. We have found this program to be a perfect fit with the goals of our alliance, as it promotes health and reaches some of the youngest and most vulnerable members of our community. Cabarrus County has a nurse in every public school and the CCMSA is proud to be a partner in that vitally important benefit. A cold and rainy day did not deter any of our diehard golfers from coming out to the tournament and helping to raise a NET amount of over $31,000!!  This bring the total raised by the Cabarrus County Medical Society Alliance's golf tournament, over the last five years, to over $146,000.  We can't wait til next year!!

2008 Vision Screening

Each year CCMSA member volunteers travel to every Cabarrus County school throughout September and October in order to screen every 2nd and 5th grade student for vision problems. In 2008, we screened approximately 4500 children at 21 schools, many of whom had undiagnosed vision issues. Several years ago, someone with the school system gave us the figure that we save the county close to $400,000 per year by providing this service to the schools.

We have our own vision screening machines which we bring with us, and the on-the-spot training explaining how to work the machines is easy--and there's a cheat sheet for reference during the process, which takes about 5 minutes per student. Alliance member Venetia Skahen wrote a grant in 2008 for funds to buy another machine--and we did receive the funds from the Cabarrus County Community Foundation! Thanks to Venetia, we will purchase a new machine in time for our screenings in the Fall.

This year volunteers were able to sign up instantly for open times/locations using a great Internet tool courtesy of Dr. Carlos Nunez, who set up the website using a free Google Web page and the mysignup.com tool. Next year, this sign-up tool will be available through a link on this Website.

2008 Golf Tournament

This fundraiser, our largest, yielded $28,000 (net) which was presented to Jan Odell from the CHA in January 2009. These funds are used to ensure that a professional nurse is present at every school in Cabarrus County.

Special thanks to volunteers Paula Galvin, Racheal Kunesh, Carolyn Farris, Lynn Hammers, Trina Tankersley, Brenda Rose, Lynn Takla, Mary Ellen Williams, Kirby Sheridan, Camille Noble, Sandra Davidson, and Pam Kaczmarek.
